A history of Ogun, the Alákoro

Imagem
During the festivals we hold here in our African-Brazilian State of Bahia, we sing and we pray in Ànàgó (Yoruba language). Among the chants we sing to praise Ogun, we sing:   Ògún pa! Ó le pa, Alákoro pa Ó járe   The translation of these to English means Ogun kills He can kill The Owner of the Helmet Kills (but) He is held not guilty   Ogun is the God of War. He is an Orisa that everyone knows in connection with iron. He works healings and reigns over everything made of iron. Ogun believers are sure that He is as a zealous caretaking Father as a mother would be to her children and family. He is the one they call to swear upon in courthouses or to ask for protection when they do have to travel. Ogun is a God who does not rest, and who washes with blood as if it were water. However, whoever is bleeding in his or her body should not come close to Him. In his earthly life Ogun is said to be the first king of Ile Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba civilization. But it is als...

During a visit to Brazil in June 2018, the Ooni of Ilê-Ifé, the City-Kingdom-Cradle of the Yoruba Civilization, declared: “... Oyo in mourning mood, King Lamidi Adeyemi has gone to join His Ancestors

Imagem
BBC Yoruba has contacted Oyo Palace for details on the death of King Lamidi Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo. The news that reached us this morning tell us that the Sovereign of the State of Oyo, a direct descendant of Sango, King Lamidi Adeyemi III, has gone back Home to join his Ancestors. The movement of authorities in  connection with the event points out to a picture in which it is observable that all the cultural programming related to this event has already started to be  put in place at the Palace and is going on throughout this morning.  One of the princes at the Palace of Oyo told BBC Yoruba that, as soon as that “sad happening” was confirmed, the ceremonial associated with the culture was triggered immediately. "We will keep the press informed as the official programming evolves and the course of the ceremonies gets defined", said the prince on behalf of the Royal House. The news circulated the night before, and BBC Yoruba went straight to the Palace earl...

Supporters of the creation of a Yoruba nation told the Nigerian government that they do not cooperate with the Movement for the Independence of Biafra (IPOB)

Supporters of the creation of a Yoruba nation told the Nigerian government that they do not cooperate with the Movement for the Independence of Biafra (IPOB) This was in response to a statement by the federal government warning that they should not cooperate with Biafra's guerrilla group, IPOB. Since September 14, 2021, Yoruba Nation activists and other Nigerian ethnic groups have protested at UN Headquarters in New York. The announcement comes as the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and other world leaders address the world during UN General Assembly. The chairman of a coalition of Nigerian militant groups, Professor Banji Akintoye, is also actively participating in the protests outside the UN headquarters to raise awareness around the world about the situation ignited by nomadic pastoralists in southern and central Nigeria. The reason for the Nigerian government to emit this alert to the Yoruba separatist movement, is that the Movement for the In...

Nago language will not disappear

Greetings to all Oduduwa's children around the world Brazil is the country with the largest black population in the world, after Nigeria. Most of the brazilian population is of African descent. Perhaps because of this situation, some of the languages and cultures inherited from our grandparents is still very much in vogue today. At least three languages from the Black Continent continue to be used today in connection with traditional religions. The Nagô is one of these languages. I apologize to all of you, my black brothers, for any inconvenience I may cause by saying what I have to say. Don't be angry with me, but, with no doubt, the Nagô, after Portuguese, is the most spoken language in this country. In ancient times, especially in Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, Nagô became a Lingua Franca spoken by many Africans, regardless of their ethnicity. Today, Nagô is called the Yoruba. Did you know that due to the importance of the Yoruba culture and l...

The Conspiracy for Independence by the people of Bahia

Imagem
One of the most important movements for the independence of Brazil, while the country was a colony of the Portuguese kingdom was a conspiracy that took place around the end of the XVIII century (1798 - 1799), in Salvador, the capital of the province of Bahia. Here is a short story about one of the most important events in the life of black people in this country. Therefore, on August 12 this year in the same public square where the Portuguese colonial regime massacred four black prisoners in 1798, two of the Bahia government officials and black leaders of various walks of the social life of the state, gathered together in honoring the four heroes who fell during that time. All of us had tears in our eyes. The event went down history dubbed as "The Conspiracy by the tailors" (because some of the participants were in that profession). It is also called "The Conspiracy by the people of Bahia." Recently, historians began to refer to the movement as "The...
